6/23/2008 in Surfers attack paparazzi taking photos of Matthew McConaughey. Nicole Cassaro The scene: the beaches of Malibu on a Saturday afternoon. Actor Matthew McConaughey was enjoying the day surfing, and of course, he was not the only one taking part in this activity. Things took a strange turn, however, when paparazzi began snapping photos of the surfing star. Fellow surfers, apparently sticking up for McConaughey's right to surf in peace, attacked the paparazzi. One member of the paparazzi told police that they were approached by a mob of surfers near Paradise Cove, where McConaughey was surfing with some friends. The surfers demanded the paparazzi stop taking photos and filming, and when the photographers did not oblige, the surfer dudes got physical. Spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, Steve Whitmore, explained the incident further to the *Los Angeles Times*. He said that the surfers formed a semi-circle around the paparazzi, saying that McConaughey did not wish to be filmed. An argument ensued, the surfers took the video camera and threw it into the water, and the photographers left with injuries, one with a broken nose. The incident, which is currently under investigation by detectives, was caught on tape by TMZ.com and X17online.com. Matthew McConaughey has yet to comment, nor have any of his people. Source: E!
