11/29/2008 in There is a meaning behind it, and surprise, it's not found in retail. Jessica McCumber Okay, it's only the first day after Thanksgiving, so I can't believe that I already feel the need to write on the issue of what the holidays are supposed to mean. Sadly, with reports of a mob of shoppers trampling a Wal-Mart worker to death, and two people getting killed by a gunman at a Toys 'R Us, a reminder seems to be a must. First, ladies and gentlemen, when you are out and about this holiday season, please remember that this is the season of "good will toward men." That means look out for one another, have patience, and remember Joe average out there is just trying their best to make it through the holiday ups and downs, same as you. Second, it's not supposed to be all about the presents anyway. Finding that must-have gift isn't supposed to be the most meaningful thing you get out of the holidays. Take a break from the stressful world of retail and watch a movie with the family or put up decorations - things that, you know, would be fun and joyous. Third, there is a reason for the season. I don't necessary mean you have to have faith, but you should purposely go out of your way to find deeper meaning in the holidays. Instead of just writing that check and calling it a day, why not get your hands dirty and donate time? There's everything from toys for tots to animal shelters that are in need of help this time of year. What ever you choose to do, remember, this is the time of year set aside to help make lives better, not worse, so please, try to act civil.
