9/2/2009 in Diane Sawyer will be the anchor of "ABC World News" in January 2010. Kimberly Morgan ABC World News anchor Charles Gibson will hand over his position to Diane Sawyer in January 2010. According to [Associated Press](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO38sCf7LOI&feature=player_embedded), Sawyer, who hosts ABC's "Good Morning America," will be the second female anchor of an evening news show behind Katie Couric's "CBS Evening News." Gibson's news show has done well in ratings but trails slightly behind Brian Williams's "NBC Nightly News." [Miami Herald](http://www.miamiherald.com/entertainment/people/story/1215217.html) reports that Gibson, who worked at ABC for almost 35 years, was the permanent anchor for "ABC World News" in 2006 after Peter Jennings, Bob Woodruff and Elizabeth Vargas took their turns at the desk. Gibson had previously planned to retire from "Good Morning America" after his contract expired in 2007. Meanwhile, Sawyer began her career on ABC in 1989. Michael Slezak of [Entertainment Weekly](http://popwatch.ew.com/2009/09/03/diane-sawyer-good-morning-america-replace/) has already created a poll to ask readers who should replace Sawyer on "Good Morning America."
