5/23/2006 in Charles Gibson will begin anchoring ABC's "World News Tonight" on Monday. Michelle Vaccaro Charles Gibson is making a move from morning to night at ABC. The 63-year-old "Good Morning America" host will anchor ABC's "World News Tonight" starting on Monday. He will continue to co-anchor the morning show with Diane Sawyer and Robin Roberts until June 30 when he will then exclusively focus on his new gig at "World News Tonight." Gibson will be replacing Elizabeth Vargas when she leaves the show on Friday to go on maternity leave. Vargas is expecting her second child this summer and will not be returning to the show after she gives birth. She will, however, continue to work on ABC's "20/20." Vargas and Bob Woodruff were chosen to share the anchor chair on "World News Tonight" after the death of Peter Jennings. Woodruff hasn't appeared on the show since being injured by a roadside bomb in Iraq on January 29. ABC News President David Westin said that having Gibson anchor the show will give Woodruff more time to recuperate.
