I'm talking about the trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron movie and it's not some crazy fan made trailer using clips from past movies. This one is real and it's in a word, kickass. There's all sorts of very cool stuff happening in this trailer so hey if you haven't watched it yet then be warned.
SPOILERS!!!!!!!
\tSPOILERS!!!!!!!
\tSPOILERS!!!!!!!
\tSPOILERS!!!!!!!
\tSPOILERS!!!!!!!
\tThere, you've been warned enough now it's time for me to talk and break down some the trailer. Here are the points I'm going to touch on from the trailer.
1) Captain Americas shield
\t2) Mjlonir
\t3) Hulkbuster
\t4) Iron Ultron
\t5) Bruce Banner

1) Caps shield, it's a character in itself and it's near indestrucable but only near it. Close to the end of the trailer the shield lays in pieces on the ground but why? Did Ultron do it? I'm going to guess he did because even though it can be damaged and/or broken, the amount of force that would take to do so is staggering. It's possible that maybe the Scarlet Witch has something to do with it being broken. She is in the comics powerful enough to do that. Not with her bare hands or even weilding a weapon, but with her magic she could say the words, shield be broken (or some such) and it would be. Beyond that I can't see how it would get broke with the characters in the movie. Thor is strong enough to put a dent in it with Mjlonir but he can't break it and maybe, maybe, if Hulk got the use of Mjlonir and he was at Planet Hulk level angry, he could break it, but that's it. Ultron is strong, I will give him some points for being strong and if they give him an adamantium body like he's had in the comics, then maybe he could dent it but I don't think he could shatter it.
2) I don't know how much it will play into the movie but the scene with Thor dropping Mjlonir has to have some sort of meaning. Maybe this is the moment in the plot where they feel as if they have no chance to win or maybe someone is hurt/killed and this is the moment Thor finds out. He just don't go dropping the hammer for any reason so it has to have some sort of meaning.

3) So we will get to see Iron Man fight Hulk wearing the Hulkbuster armor but why? Why are these two fighting each other? I know why it is being put into the movie, it will be a huge draw and exciting moment but what is the cause of the fight? Sure it could be that the Hulk just gets pissed off at Tony Stark, that's something that could easily happen, but what if Ultron has something to do with them going at it? If so, what would that reason be?
4) This is something that I'm not surprised about and it's possible that it was talked about but Ultron first coming into existence by using Iron Man suits. It's almost a given that when you take out having Hank Pym building Ultron that it would be Ultron himself using the armor suits to build a body for himself. He looked pretty cool and I look forward to that first moment of realization that the suits are being taken over by Ultron.

5) What's up with Bruce Banner? He's sitting there looking like he's wrapped up in a jacket or blanket. Is he having a break down? What is going on with him? Seems like this movie will have a big impact on what's going to happen to the Hulk.

FREE COMICS:
\tI'm posting this on Saturday October 25, 2014 and on this day it's Free Comic Book Day Halloween edition. Go to your local shop to see if they have any free comics for you. There's not as many as the May FCBD event but there are some free ones that are always good cause they are free. In fact I'm going right now.

Sat, 25 Oct 2014 22:27:40 +0000 Lee Roberts 58863 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/10/25/avengers-trailer-and-free-comics#comments Marvel Movie Rumors and Walking Dead Season 5 Starts http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/10/12/marvel-movie-rumors-and-walking-dead-season-5-starts

\tMORE RUMORS TO GO AROUND:
\tI'm pretty excited about these rumors and hope that they are true because if so they could mean some huge movies for Marvel. I've been seeing talk about how Sony and Marvel could work out a deal that would allow the Spider-Man movies (Sony has the rights to those) be a part of the Avengers univers in the movies. Just how cool would that be to see Spidey in an Avengers movie? Now before I get all fanboy on the topic I have to still point out that even if the deal is made that doesn't actually mean Spidey will be in an Avengers movie. All that means is that the two movies could cross in being related. What that means is that like it was once rumored, an Avengers movie might have the Oscorp building in the background, or they talk about Spidey or anything that is in the Amazing Spider-Man movies. That could be just another character talking about what happened to actually having Spidey in the movie, so it might be cool that the idea is there but it might not turn out to be what I would want.
\t

\tUnless that is the other rumor turns out to be true. That rumor is that there could be a Secret Wars movie. If you don't know what the Secret Wars is, it's something that would be huge. I mean HUGE!
\tSimple way to describe the Secret Wars is that there is a ultimate powerful being called the Beyonder who pulls heroes and villains alike to battle it out on another planet that he created called Battleworld. There they have to fight and the winners will get whatever they want. It's a big deal because it first has a lot of characters fighting each other and another reason is that this was the first appearance of the symbiote that Spider-Man gets to later become Venom. Now seeing how that the rumor of Sony and Marvel working together to bring Spidey into the Avengers universe and vice versa, this would leave it open for Marvel to do the Secret Wars movie which would have Spidey in it and since this is the first appearance of the symbiote and they are planning on doing a Venom movie, well boom, origin story told.
\t

\t
\tThere's also rumors that the original cast of Avengers won't be in the Avengers 3. This could mean that they are keeping the actors free to be able to film Secret Wars without having to take more years in waiting to start production. The cast of Secret Wars comics included these characters, there’s Captain America, Captain Marvel, Hawkeye, Iron Man, She-Hulk, Thor, the Wasp, Human Torch, Mister Fantastic, the Thing, Spider-Man, Spider-Woman and the Hulk.
\t

\t
\tThere was also some X-Men that was in Secret Wars, Colossus, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Professor X, Rogue, Storm, Wolverine, Magneto, and Lockheed the Dragon. Not sure how or if they would be put in the Secret Wars but I doubt it since X-Men is a Fox movie and not Sony. Though that could also be said for the characters Human Torch, Mister Fantastic, and the Thing because they are property of Fox as well. Out of the 21 characters (I'm not really counting Lockheed in the movie as much as I would like to see Lockheed I doubt they would include him) there are really only 10 that could be in it. Though I'm not sure if Spider-Woman, Captain Marvel, and She-Hulk are Marvel or another production company property, which if they are then that's only 7 that can be in it. Hmm, Secret Wars not looking to full of the original characters but I still want to see it.

\tWALKING DEAD:
\tDon't forget that season 5 of the Walking Dead starts on Sunday Oct 12. Season 4 ended with the group caught in the train depot with the cannibals. I've seen some articles talking about how the way they deal with the people at Terminus and how it will be brutal. Considering how the show has had some very brutal moments, Hershel being decapitated, I'm wondering how they will step it up this season. How the comics deal with this point for the characters is something that was jaw dropping so I'm looking forward to the new season.

Sun, 12 Oct 2014 07:34:35 +0000 Lee Roberts 58605 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/10/12/marvel-movie-rumors-and-walking-dead-season-5-starts#comments Batman Cover Price Raises http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/10/04/batman-cover-price-raises

\tTHE COST OF BEING A FANBOY/FANGIRL:
\tI was going to talk about a bunch of different topics in this weeks blog, such as the release of the Thor and Captain America comics that have the new female Thor and the new Captain America, I was going to talk about the second season of Marvel's Agents of SHIELD, how DC is doing well with Futures End storyline, but instead of those and others I'm going to use this blog to talk about my disappointment in the idea that DC has put out this week.
\tDC said that they are going to be changing the price of Batman from $3.99 to $4.99 as the regular cover price starting next week with the new story Endgame.
\tNO!
\tI can't stress this enough, that if this happens that yes it's only a dollar and yes it's only 1 issue, for now.
\tThink about it this way. Every time they raise the price it starts with 1 issue then more and more follow. There are more $3.99 books then $2.99, even after that one short, very short, period when they said everything was going to be $2.99 (that didn't last). Once Batman is $4.99, another title will follow and before you know it all the $3.99 books will be $4.99, then other publishers will follow suit and now we are paying $5 for our books.
\tThat also means that when they do an annual or extra sized (or in some cases just cause they wanted to) they can make the price $5.99-$7.99.

\tNow for some people this might not seem like a big deal. It's only a dollar, so why would I be upset about that? Well, if I only bought under 10 titles a month then no that's not that bad cause I'm going from $9 a week to $11 so not that big of a jump.
\tI don't buy under 10 a month.
\tFor me a small week in comics is between 12-15 books. Average month is say around 65 books a month. Now that should tell you my cost right there and raising the price a dollar is no longer it being just a dollar. I've set aside a certain amount of money for my comics, I can't spend over that limit, less yes but not more. So, what happens when I'm paying more for the books and have to keep the same limit?
\tLess books.

\tIf I have to drop titles, which will be what happens, I will drop titles to stay on budget and then I will drop titles because I can't read all of them. For example, the publishers have been doing good with keeping the related titles tied to each other, the stories are in continuity with each other but if I drop say Batman, then I'm dropping Detective, which if I'm dropping those two then Batman and Robin will be going as well. If Marvel does this, which I'm sure they will, then Avengers would probably go up first and the other Avengers titles as well and there are a bunch of them. That means I'd be dropping all of them because it would be annoying to read a story that had something related in another book(s) that I didn't read so I don't get the full story in the one I'm reading and if I'm paying such a hefty price for that book and not getting the full enjoyment of the story then why am I paying that?
\tThe future looks grim for me in the new title books and it might become that instead of buying the amount that I do now I will end up buying only under 10 a month.
\tWhich I'm already planning for that eventuality by deciding which books I don't actually have to read and can drop. I'm also considering that if I drop the amount down to under 10 a month, that money that I've budgeted for new comics will go towards getting old comics. I might not be cutting comics but I'm not cutting comics out of my life. I've been trying to get every Spider-Man book that's been released, minus reprints and some variants, but that will be a lifelong quest that will also be expensive. My first goal is the first 100 of Amazing, which if you know, Amazing Fantasy #15 is not cheap, even if it's barely holding together. So, I could now be looking at only getting one book a month where it's a early edition of one that cost what I used to spend.
\t

Sat, 04 Oct 2014 05:42:12 +0000 Lee Roberts 58473 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/10/04/batman-cover-price-raises#comments Marvel Turns 75 http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/09/12/marvel-turns-75

HAPPY 75TH MARVEL:

If you didn't know this, Marvel Comics is celebrating their 75th anniversary or birthday. For anyone that has never been trying to explain what it's about and why it's worth spending the time, money, and energy to go is near impossible. Sure I can talk about it all day, in fact the weeks leading up to it I was talking about it non-stop while the months before I would bring it up at least twice a week every week, and now that it's been 4 days since the end of the con I've still been talking about it. In fact it's all that I can think about and though I know everyone is tired of me talking about it, I want to talk about it some more.
\tThat's just a small scale of the enjoyment that Dragoncon brings to me. Now what is Dragoncon about?
\tCosplay
\tPhotos
\tMeeting new people
\tBelonging
\tAcceptance
\tCelebrities
\tPanels
\tWorkshops
\tPhotoshoots
\tCostume Contests
\tDragoncon TV
\tAutographs
\tArtist Alley
\tArt Show
\tPeople Watching
\tThose are the key points to the con but like I said, it's nearly impossible to describe the con to someone that hasn't been before. You know what those words are, you might even know or have an idea of what they mean in relation to a convention but this is a con unlike non other (that I've been too and have been told) and knowing that there are people in costume or taking photos of them at the con is not the same as having the experience of being there to partake in it all yourself.
\tNow, with that said, here's the best way to describe Dragoncon. It's a 4 day (really 5 for the devoted fans that get there on Thursday) cosplay party where all fanboys and fangirls can emerse themselves in their fandom while having no judgement other than of how cool they look and are for being there while getting to meet celebrities and finding some very cool stuff.
\tThis year was no different than previous years for me where I start it expecting to do certain things but end up barely doing a third of what I had planned. What I did plan was going to the two Guardians of the Galaxy panels with James Gunn and Sean Gunn, getting the autograph of James Gunn, and going to all the group photoshoots.
\tThat was my main goals, what I ended up doing is only one panel of Guardians, got my autograph, and then going to a Karate Kid panel, Marvel Now panel, and a 80's panel. I missed out on all the photoshoots but in place of them I had my own photoshoots with friends and friends of the friends while also getting more video that I will use to create a little video with. I also tried a small amount of time lapse but that was not as I had wanted it to be but well, I will do better next year.
\tHere's a few things that I learned while at Dragoncon 2014 (some of which are hitting the net already).
\tJames Gunn had originally planned to have Stan Lee's cameo in Guardians of the Galaxy to be of him in the Collector's collection where Groot would have walked by one of the displays that housed Stan Lee. Stan Lee would then look up and give the middle finger to Groot. This was not used in the movie but the way that James Gunn explained it sounded like it would have been very funny. He also had a stand in for the idea and posted this pic (which he said at the con he would do and he stood by his word and promptly posted it).

\tHere is what he posted about the photo on Instagram.
\t"#gotgpicoftheday At a panel on Sunday at Dragoncon, I talked about a deleted @realstanlee cameo in Guardians, and promised the folks there I’d post a photo on Instagram - so here it is! As you can see, this is not Stan, but a double. In the original cut of the film, when the Guardians enter the Collector’s museum, Rocket looks over and sees Cosmo the dog in one display case, Quill looks over into another display case and is surprised by a tentacle slapping against the glass, and Groot looks over and sees, in another display case, Stan Lee.
\tIn one take, Stan Lee just slowly turns up his finger, flipping off Groot. We shot this footage with a Stan Lee double because Stan wasn’t able to come to the UK at the time. The plan was to shoot Stan in the same lighting when I was back in LA, and we’d digitally replace the double’s head with Stan’s actual head (not quite as difficult as it sounds). Although I thought the cameo was funny, I thought the flipping off joke was too similar to the moment earlier in the film where Quill flips off the Nova Corps, so I excised that part of it immediately.
\tA couple of the guys at Marvel thought Stan Lee in a case was too broad of a joke in general, and that it took the audience out of the movie. I argued about it for a bit, but we ended up not keeping it in the film. In a pretty typical case of Internet-journalism-telephone, articles online yesterday said that Disney forbade the scene because of standards . After that Superman had a solid background, he had his powers, did you know that one time he couldn't fly and that his powers came not from our yellow sun but from another planet that had stronger gravity? Yeah, most people don't but that's what the multiverse changed.

\t

\tComing out next week DC Comics will be launching a 9 issue limited series called, "Multiversity" by Grant Morrison. If you're wondering how many worlds will be included in this multiverse it's not going to be infinite, it's only 52. Yep, DC is sticking with the whole 52 theme (which I'm glad they did) by only having the multiverse include 52 different worlds. One way this limited series could be described as is a what-if story. Though this will be real, it's not a make believe scenario, having the 52 different worlds will open up the idea that there are different versions of the heroes that we know from the main universe. In this series there will be more homosexual heroes, there will be African-American heroes, and even gender different heroes (what I mean by that is for example Aquaman is really Aquawoman). So, this will open up DC's universe into a larger set of worlds and stories, where they take it after the 9 issues have been put out is still unknown, well, that is except for Earth 2, that's been a on-going title for awhile now.

\t

\t

\t

\tA LOT FOR LESS AND EXCLUSIVE:

\tHere is something that I liked but ends up not helping me out, though is still good. That is Marvel giving Walmart some exclusive graphic novels to sell for a low price of $5. These are The Avengers 2011 relaunch that was done by Brian Michael Bendis and John Romita Jr., The Amazing Spider-Man Big Time, the relauch of Guardians of the Galaxy that's the current run on the title, and Captain America Winter Solider. I'm tempted to go buy them just for the fact that they are $5.

\t

\t

\tSPEAKING OF GUARDIANS:

\tHave you watched the movie yet? What movie? Guardians of the Galaxy of course! Well, here's some news that might have the comic fans wondering, like me. In the movie there is mention of Peter's dad and how he is looking for Peter. Well, I and like I assume every other Guardians comic fan, just figured the dad was going to be J'Son of Spartex but what I have found out is that it's not. Right now nothing 100% has been told but it was said that the father will not be someone we are expecting and won't be the one we see in the comic. So who will be the father to Star Lord? Just going to have to wait for further news on that front.

\t

Tags:

marvel

dc

comics

walmart

Sat, 16 Aug 2014 01:40:51 +0000 Lee Roberts 57384 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/08/15/multiverse-walmart-exclusives-and-not-the-dad-you-expect#comments Crossed Ending, Ant Man Casting Call in the ATL and Guardians http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/08/08/crossed-ending-ant-man-casting-call-in-the-atl-and-guardians

\tCROSSED DIGITAL COMING TO AN END:

\tAlright, to be honest I have not read any of the Crossed titles but while I'm being honest I do want to read them. In fact about 2 years ago I started to get the comics so I could read them. I've been able to get a good chunk of them but because I haven't read the printed books I haven't read the digital one. Now after four years and over a thousand pages, Simon Spurrier will be ending the digital title, Crossed: Wish You Were Here. With not knowing the story from not reading it I don't know how good or bad the book might be. However, I have heard and read about it and it seems to be one that's pretty good, gruesome, violent, but good. I've heard enough positive remarks about the title that I was spurred into buying a lot of the printed version of the book and one day I will get around to reading them, by then hopefully I can afford to get the ones I didn't buy.

\t

\t

\t

\t15 MINUTES OF FAME:

\tDo you live in Atlanta, GA?

\tDo you want to be in the movies?

\tMore to the point, do you want to be in the upcoming movie by Marvel, Ant-Man?

\tIf so check out this casting call by New Life Casting:

\tANT-MAN CASTING CALL: New Life Casting is looking for people to play the roles below in a feature film beginning late August in the Atlanta area. That is I really enjoyed it for it being a movie based on a comic but I have my mixed thoughts for the movie. Since I do read the comic, not only do I read it but I've been reading it for many years before there was even talks of a movie. Guardians of the Galaxy is in the top 10 books for me so I was pretty excited about having this movie made and like I said I did really enjoy.

\thttp://www.ramascreen.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Guardians-Of-The-Ga...

\tYet it does not match with the comic.

\tOk, I know it's not going to be exactly the same but being 100% the same and being similar is two different things. Let me run it down to you in a list.

\t1) Gamora: In the comic she is one of the most deadlist assassins in the galaxy. She is one tough woman that can take down pretty much anyone and has done so many times. When it comes to the normal villain, she is able to take on a whole horde of them. She's someone that should not be messed with, that's the comics Gamora. The movie Gamora, not nearly the same. She has more feelings, something that the comic version don't show hardly at all. She is also beat up and knocked out really easily in the movie by Peter Quill. This is not the woman from the comics that I know.

\t

\t

\t2) Drax the Destory: His name says it all, he's a destroyer and in the comic he really is. Comic Drax is close to being on the level of Gamora, whereas Gamora is an assassin, Drax just destroys everything. Movie Drax, well he also don't compare to his comic counterpart. In this one he's pouting some, he's not calculating, and worst of all he's not a destroyer. Sure he's called that, the Nova Corps even say it, but he gets beat up more than some of the villains it seems.

\t

\t

\t4) Nova Corp: Comic verson of the Nova Corp or even when it's only one guy, they have powers. Sure they come from the helmits but they still can fly in space without the need of a ship, they have energy projection, and they are pretty tough. In the movie they are no more than cops in space. They didn't seem to have any sort of powers, they sure didn't shoot anything out, and they had to use ships. Now granted it could be said that they still have those powers it just wasn't needed to be shown in the movie, but the way it looked to me was that they didn't have them.

\t

\t

\t5) Ronan: This is a man in the comic that is another guy with extreme power and is pretty intemidating. To me the movie version of him looked small and though he was creepy looking, he didn't look like someone that would make the galaxy shiver.

\t

\t

\t6) Who are these people? That's a question that was asked to me a lot by people. I know them, I know their history, but in this movie we only get the basic idea of them. What is given is the names, who they work for, and some idea of how tough and known they are, but as a whole we don't know anything about them. Iron Man we knew what drove Tony Stark, we get why Steve Rogers is Captain America, and Thor has reasons for being on Earth, all of which we know but aside from the main five Guardians, the rest of the characters we really don't know anything about them.

\t

\t

\tAside from those main flaws for me, this movie was great. I can't wait to watch it again, there's so much going on, I want to see some of the background in the Collector's collection, I hear there's someone that could be Beta Ray Bill, and I just want to watch it again.

Tags:

marvel

dc

comics

Guardians of the Galaxy

Crossed

Ant Man

Sat, 09 Aug 2014 03:12:31 +0000 Lee Roberts 57206 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/08/08/crossed-ending-ant-man-casting-call-in-the-atl-and-guardians#comments Thanos Has a Voice and Comics to Watch Out For http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/08/02/thanos-has-a-voice-and-comics-to-watch-out-for

MORE NEWS FROM SDCC

It's over for another year but there is so much news that comes from San Diego Comic Con that even with me looking at articles on it days later I'm finding out more things.
\tSo to keep up with all the updates and what I missed and didn't put in last weeks blog, I'm now putting more in this weeks. Lets start of with some Marvel Universe news.
\tWe know that that the end goal for the Marvel Cinematic Universe is to have the Avengers going up against Thanos. He was shown in the credit scenes in the first movie, he's first seen and heard (as of right now I haven't watched GotG yet) in Guardians of the Galaxy, and that in the last Avengers movie he will most likely be the main villain. The actor playing the Mad Titan, Josh Brolin. Which I got to say I'm thinking he can pull it off. He's a good actor, I've seen him do roles where he's the villain, so being Thanos should be a good choice for him.

SHIELD TV TO COMICS:
\tThis bit of news from SDCC tells that some of the characters of the hit TV series, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will be getting print formatted. I'm guessing it's going to be the main supporting characters, since Coulson is already in the 616 universe, that leaves the supporting cast getting put into it. Though, this might be some big news for anyone that likes having a Shield title, for me it's really not that surprising. Here's why, because it's Shield, an agency that can have any amount of and any one being a part of it so bringing in characters from a TV show isn't like say having a different person being a known hero or a new hero being introduced, these are just people that are agents of a government agency.

\t
\t
HOT BOOKS:
\tAlright, I really got to admit that it's been pretty good to be into comics during the last 10 years, maybe even the last 15, but I'm loving comics more now than I have ever. With the past stories like Civil War in Marvel, DC rebooting every single one of their titles, and independent publishers are putting out series that rival some of the stories that I see in the big 2 publishers. Things are really kicking into gear this year as well as we see sales with certain comics going up and the books literally can't be kept on the shelves, even when they are getting multiple printings. So because of that here are some of the books that you might want to keep an eye out for, some already have been put out and getting reorders and reprints.
\t
1) Amazing Spider-Man #4 -- this is the first appearance of Silk, well the first time she is shown as Silk, the character has been seen before but this is a hot book right now and it came out on July 23, 2014, today as I write this it's only July 28, 2014 and this book is one that people want.

\t
2) Amazing Spider-Man #5 -- even though this one hasn't came out yet, it's going to be one you want to be at you comic shop when it opens the day this title does come out. With Morlun being a threat or possible threat once again and the new spider powered Silk, this is going to be a must have book.

\t
3) Grayson #1 -- well, this one is to be expected to be a hot book, it's a #1, it's right off of the heels of Forever Evil, Dick has been outed, and he's no longer Nightwing, so yeah, if you have a first printing, you might be able to get a few ducks for it while it's hot.

\t
4) Wolverine (all issues from #8 up) -- if you don't know this by now, Marvel is killing Logan aka Wolverine and it kicked into gear in issue #8. If you don't have one of the issues, especially the lower number issues and #8 finding a first print will cost you and even some reprints will be hard to get or a few ducks more than the cover price. But the upcoming issues, #11 and so are going to be hard to get and flying off the shelves because it's ticking down to the end people.

\t
5) Death of Wolverine -- these are the books that will be really tough to get if you miss and there are going to be a ton of variant covers. Some that I want are the Canadian retailer variants, but there are others that look really cool but the point is, with these books still not released until September, they are expected to sale like mad. If you are wanting this book, regular or variant covers, either and/or both, go to your comic shop to preorder (though at this point the Previews order forms where put in months ago but you might be able to open a hold box but don't expect to get one if you only order the one book, they want people that actually come in for pull boxes not just a one time deal for one issue) the other way is preorder online at places like Midtown Comics or Dynamic Forces.
\t

6) Wicked + Divine -- this book just came out, it's only has 2 issues out right now, I have both, and yes it's good enough that it's a hot book that people are wanting.

\t
7) Harley Quinn -- Almost all of the issues for this is going off the shelves pretty fast as well as getting reprints. Then add in the variant covers, like the recently released #7 Bombshell issue and upcoming #9 Selfie variant.

\t
8) Batman -- this has been a hot book with the Zero Year story and that's thanks to Scott Synder but the upcoming #34 Selfie variant will also be a wanted issue

\t
9) Spider-Man 2099 -- issue #2 hasn't come out yet but as #1 flew off the shelves you better expect this one to go as well.

\t
10) New Suicide Squad -- it's like the title says, New Suicide Squad and even I missed out on getting #1 that came out last week so expect to find that #2 will be selling as fast as well and that #1 will be a higher priced first printing if you want it and getting reprinted as well.

\t
\tNow these titles I'm thinking are ones that will be soon to be hot because of the changes and the news that has been released.
\t
1) Thor -- with the news of a new female taking control of might Mjolnir you better expect that this title will be going fast, especially the issue that first has Thor loosing his hammer then the first of the new female Thor.

\t
2) Captain America -- with Steve Rogers no longer wielding the shield and the Falcon becoming the new Captain America, the main title and any corresponding titles that will have Sam Wilson first appearing in it as the new Cap will be sought after comics.

Sat, 02 Aug 2014 04:39:55 +0000 Lee Roberts 57048 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/08/02/thanos-has-a-voice-and-comics-to-watch-out-for#comments SDCC 2014 http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/07/26/sdcc-2014

SDCC 2014:
\tIf you don't know what that stands for, it's, San Diego Comic Con, and it's going on right now, as I type this, as I post this, as I sit here wishing that I was there instead (at least I have Dragon Con coming up in 5 weeks). Right now I don't know more than that ever since Dan Slott was a little kid he said he has wanted to write this story. It's a story that he has been dropping clues to it in every title, except for Amazing Spider-Man that is, that he has wrote since writing at Marvel. That's a whole lot of books, a whole lot. It's a story that according to Slott is a story that's too cosmic in nature to include Spider-Man and even Silver Surfer might not be able to fit in but he wants to do the story. While looking up for more info on this Reckoning War I have found a few sites of people talking about it and having their own theories. One note that has shown up is that it would be because of something that She-Hulk has done that would change Earth and the whole universe and is a bad thing to happen. The clues that have been dropped? Well, it would involve the Watchers, which hey look what's going on right now, Original Sin, all about the Watcher, but there was another topic that was this question, “Why do the Watchers watch?”. Still, I don't know nothing more than that but will keep looking out for it.

BATMAN 75TH ANNIVERSARY:
\tOk, if you like Batman, and come on who don't, then you should do a look up on SDCC for the DC booth. That's right, Thor will be a female and no longer the male that we know. So how is this going to happen?

\tFrom what I have gathered so far is that Thor Odinson will do something that will make him unworthy of Mjolnir and all the power that comes along with it. Because of that he will lose Mjolnir and I'm guessing most of his powers but being that he is still the Odinson he should have his natural powers that are not with the hammer. I'm not sure who it will be but a female will pick up Mjolnir and take on all the powers of Thor and then become the new Thor. Though if you are worried what will become of Thor Odinson then just take a look at the cover to the Avengers #35 where he is holding the axe Jarnbjorn. If you look at the cover you can see that he's not wearing his typical armor but he still looks pretty tough.

\tGOODBYE HAWKEYE...THE COMIC:
\tWell, with all the delays that the comic has had I'm really not surprised to find out that Hawkeye will be coming to an end with issue #22. I got to say I'm really disappointed to be seeing this title coming to an end. It was one that I liked instantly, it has or I should say will have had great writing, great artwork, and was just an all around fun comic to read. With the track suit bad guys, the dog, having bought a building, and all the bro's that you can handle was given to us in this book and it will all be over. Not sure why this is coming to an end, maybe because Matt Fraction has a lot on his plate or Marvel is just doing what Marvel does, cancel good books while giving us more of others that we don't need.

\tAND NOW ABOUT IRON MAN:
\tSeems like Marvel is making changes to the Avengers line up because last week I talked about how Steve Rogers lost his super soldier serum, then in this week there's Thor losing his power and a female taking over, and now to continue on with the theme of change, it's Iron Man. There will be a new Iron Man book replacing titled Superior Iron Man and no he's not being mind controlled by Doc Ock.
\t

\t
\tFrom what I've read, this is Tony Stark, no alternate version, no other world/universe, not being mind controlled, or any other reason that would make him not himself. After the events of "Axis", Tony will move to San Francisco where he will become a darker and more on the lines of an anti-hero or possibly close to a villain. His plan is to release a version of the Extremis tech on the people of San Fran but will this be a good thing? From what I'm reading he's going to be closer to a villain than a hero and will have to at one point face Daredevil, who has moved to San Fran. Along with his darker side coming out of him, Tony will done a new suit of armor that is all shiny and white or silverish. Whatever color you want to call the armor this is not anything that surprising or at all different or new. Iron Man has been changing his armor since the start of the book so giving him a new suit and different look is expected with this character.
\t
80'S HAPPINESS FOR ME:
\tI'm an 80's television and movies fan and for me they are some of the best entertainment there is out there. So when I read that IDW and Lion Forge Comics will be putting into print a Knight Rider and Airwolf comic. I don't know when it will happen, but I don't really care because I'm just excited that they will be getting a comic. My only gripe so far is that Airwolf don't look nothing like the helicopter from the show. I know they have to update it to look like it could be tougher and unstoppable but if you look at the original copter, it was that and still can be that. For KITT, he seems to keep the look of the Trans-Am, so hey IDW, make Airwolf the same as the show.
\t

\t

\t
\t

\t
LIFE WTIH ARCHIE #36:
\tThis week was the release for Life With Archie #36 where in it he dies. If you missed out on getting you copy, like I"m guessing a lot of people did, you need not worry, it's getting reprinted. It's also possible that if you check out you comic shop they might still have some, one of the shops I went to get my copy only had 4 left on the shelf about 10 minutes after opening on Wednesday morning. I got mine and another guy picked one up right as I was reaching for mine, so that left 2 in the first 10 minutes of opening that the store had left. Odds are low that a shop will still have them at this point but who knows you could luck out. If that don't work, look on some sites, they might have some left, like Midtown Comics or the amazon of comics, Comics Collector Live.
\t

\t
SOME MOVIE NEWS NOW:
\tHere's the first look at what Ultron will look like in the Avengers: Age of Ultron movie, thanks to the magazine Entertainment Weekly.
\t

\t
\tI got to say that I'm pretty impressed with the way Ultron looks. I figured they would change his looks from the comic version but he still looks pretty close to the comic but even more menacing. Which just makes it all the more cooler. And look in the background of the cover, there's other Ultrons so looks like this sequel will have a major battle between humans and robots.
\t
\tOne of the comics that has become a favorite of mine from Valiant is Archer & Armstrong. A quick rundown for you on this book is that Archer, a young guy who was raised by his crazy parents with crazy religious beliefs has teamed up with the one guy he was supposed to kill. That guy is Armstrong, an immortal that got his immortality because of a boon where he can heal from anything and really likes to drink. Well, these two are in the works to be getting a movie and out of all the comics that can get a movie I really hope this one works out.
\t

\tA MUST READ BOOK:
\tIf you are looking for a new book to pick up, one that got me hooked from the first page, that would be the new title called “The Wicked + The Divine”. It's written by Kieron Gillen with artwork by Jamie McKelvie while being published by Image Comics. Right now it's on the second issue, the first issue already having a reprint after it's release on June 18, 2014, yeah pretty quick for a second printing on a new book.

\t

\tHere's why the book has already had a reprint so quickly, it's just a really good book. The plot, every 90 years there are 12 gods that incarnate themselves as humans but after only 2 years as being humans they die. Now you might think that they keep this kind of a thing a secret, you would be wrong. These humans/gods let it known to the public that they are the gods and they are going to have fun with the two years they have on the Earth.

\t

\tThis book opens with a bang, almost literally since there is an explosion that has no explanation as to why it happens. Though I have an idea right now as to why but still, the mystery is nice touch to it. What's also awesome about this book, the covers. I was lucky enough to pick up the first printing of both issues #1 and #2 and the covers are astounding. Still, the reprint cover is also pretty cool. This is a book that is different then typical cape and tights books and it's one that I will read until it ends.

Tags:

marvel

dc

Image

Thor

Iron Man

Archer

Armstrong

Avengers

Ultron

comics

Fri, 18 Jul 2014 23:25:37 +0000 Lee Roberts 56651 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/07/18/thor-is-a-woman-iron-man-is-superior-80s-return-archie-dies-archer#comments ","checked":"2022-08-07T20:25:06.421Z"},{"_id":"62ef135239d0b755c508d57c","url":"shakefire.com/blog/feed","content":" Shakefire.com blogs http://www.shakefire.com/blog en A Writer’s Perspective: Why Beauty and the Beast is the Show to Watch http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/nancy-holder/2014/12/23/a-writer-s-perspective-why-beauty-and-the-beast-is-the-show-to-watch

\t“Are those scripts?” asked the parking attendant as I pulled into yet another hotel in Los Angeles (I travel a lot) and unloaded four three-inch binders, two pink and two blue, onto the luggage cart.

\t

\tYes, they are. I have two seasons of Beauty and the Beast scripts contained in four enormous binders—pink for season one, blue for season two—and I have taken them with me everywhere as I work on my three tribute novels for the show. Yes, I have digital copies on my hard drive; yes I could simply slip my laptop into an oversized purse and burrow in for days of writing and room service. But what sets BatB apart for a “tie-in” writer like me—someone who tries to create more adventures for the characters of a show, set in their world—is that the scripts for Beauty and the Beast are so well-written they’re like picture books, or perhaps more correctly, magical illuminated manuscripts. And they’ve just gotten better and better.

\t

\tAs my fellow fans (“Beasties”) will agree, Vincent, Catherine, Tess, J.T., and their friends and enemies are real to us and live in our heads—and hearts—even when the show is not currently airing. This is because the BatB writers are completely committed to telling stories that capture the passion and devotion of VinCat while sending Beauty and her Beast on pulse-pounding adventures, solving mysteries and risking their lives for justice. What makes BatB the show to watch is that they do this so well. BatB has one of the most ardent fan bases in the world, and it’s because this “universe” has expanded way beyond a weekly viewing event. It’s part of our lives.

\t

\tEnter someone like me, attempting to keep that universe growing in other, in my case through novels. In Vendetta, my first BatB novel, I have attempted to give fans more of our special world, in which Catherine, Vincent, Tess, and J.T. work to rescue the kidnapped son of New York City’s most powerful crime boss while at the same time recapturing Cat’s father—unaware that Gabe has nefarious plans of his own. I felt a mandate to lavish extra time and attention on this book because of the high bar the show writers have set. My aim was also to write an exciting novel that “regular” readers would enjoy even if they aren’t ardent Beasties. For that reason, I couldn’t be a lazy novelist and simply depend on touching the heartstrings of fellow fans. I had to make sure I plotted a good story and keep the characterizations clear and strong for someone who might not know who Heather was, or understand a reference to “Z-babe.”

\t

\tSometimes it surprises viewers to hear that writers consider TV to be a visual medium. A TV script is an art form all its own because the images that writers evoke with words create the worlds for those special shows that take on a life of their own—like Beauty and the Beast. From these carefully crafted manuscripts, the actors, director, production designer, director of photography, stunt coordinator, and all the other staff and crew contribute their best work—but it all comes down to the scripts first. I have to write my novels before I view most of a season’s episodes—Vendetta was completed long before the huge reveals of the end of season one were shown onscreen—but because of the strength of the scripts, I could see the drama and tragedy that awaited us after a season-one-ending spoiler phone call from CBS.

\t

\tI actually do several viewings of BatB with the sound turned off so I can see the nonverbal themes and metaphors that the teleplay writers have fashioned. For example, Vincent is often paired with roses; important “girl discussions” tend to take place at the coffee house Il Cantuccio; and who can erase from memory the magical world of Cat’s rooftop—which actually evokes her blurry memories of the forest, where Vincent first saved her and set them on the course of their destined love? You can see that I have written all these details into Vendetta. In my own way, I attempt to share the magic of the most involving show on television—and the scripts are my spell books. I hope that if you read Vendetta, you will likewise be transported by the sorcery of words into the enchanted realm of Beauty and the Beast. I assure you, my task was made much easier by the wizards who write for the show to watch on TV for the past two years…with at least one more season to go. And that’s why I drag this gigantic binders brimming with scripts all over L.A.—and count myself unbelievably lucky to do so.
\tBUY VENDETTA BY NANCY HOLDER NOW!

Tue, 23 Dec 2014 18:48:56 +0000 Nancy Holder 59247 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/nancy-holder/2014/12/23/a-writer-s-perspective-why-beauty-and-the-beast-is-the-show-to-watch#comments A Look Back at Best of 2014 http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/12/21/a-look-back-at-best-of-2014

THE YEAR IS ALMOST OVER:
\tWell, 2014 is almost over, just little over a week left in the year in fact, and in that light I want to look back at the year that was for comics. I will give a list of some of the bests from this past year, some I've put on the list because I think they are and some are on there because they where the best according to sales and majority of the reviews they received. So, let me begin with the best books to come out in 2014. Oh, these have no real ranking in the order they come in, the first is not the best of them and the last is not the least best of them, they are just the order that I typed them and nothing more than that and can be moved around in order in any direction.

\tBEST TITLES:
A) The Wicked + The Divine – Published by Image Comics, it's currently on issue #6, wrote by Kieron Gillen and art by Jamie McKelvie. This book is about a group of people that where normal until gaining the powers and minds of deities who will now only live 2 years because of gaining these powers. In this world this has been going on for as long as they can remember so it's not shocking that it happens, it's in fact popular, but with a death being involved there's now a mystery to uncover in their world and now the world is looking at them differently.

B) Spider-Verse – Published by Marvel Comics, wrote by Dan Slott and many others, art by many as well, currently on part 3 of it but there are a total of 21 books out that involve the Spider-Verse that are Edge of the Spider-Verse, Superior Spider-Man, Scarlet Spiders, Spider-Woman, and Amazing Spider-Man. The story takes every possible Spider-Man/Spider-Woman that Marvel is legally allowed to use and pits them against the Inheritors (one being Morlun) in a fight to the deaths. It's brutal and good.

C) Moon Knight – Published by Marvel Comics, on issue #10, first wrote byWarren Ellis and artist Declan for the first 6 issues, currently it's Brian Wood and Greg Smallwood on the title. This is not the Moon Knight of old, yet it is. It still revolves around Marc Spector being crazy with the multiple personalities and he does go out at times in his full suit and gear. However, it's primarly about him dealing with his personalities and doing it in a different way where he wears a suit and tie instead and the fights he gets into are more emotional than just thugs on the street.

D) Batman Eternal – Published by DC Comics, this is a weekly comic and is on issue #37 at time of writing this but it started in April, wrote and drawn by multiple people but main writer is Scott Synder. This story has been progressive and falls sometime before Batman “Endgame”, it involves a lot of twists in the plot as well as different and new characters.

E) Batman – Published by DC Comics, wrote by Scott Synder and drawn by Greg Capullo and is on issue #37. Right now the story line is called “Endgame” where the Joker is causing some new and big damage in it. This year has been a good one for Batman stories.

F) Outcast – Published by Image Comics, wrote by Robert Kirkman and drawn by Paul Azaceta and is on issue #5. This book is about demonic possion and is getting very popular and if you want to get this while the back issue are still under $20 you better hurry. Right now Robert Kirkman is in Rock Hill, SC filming a pilot for Outcast to be put on a premium channel.

G) The Walking Dead – Published by Image Comics, wrote by Robert Kirkman and drawn by Charlie Adlard and is on issue #135. Now it's the actual movie that gets a turn at being sold out. To be more specific, I mean the steelbook exclusive only sold at Best Buy for the Blu Ray 3D/Blu Ray/Digital Copy of Guardians of the Galaxy. Like the cassette, it was what I wanted to get, and yes I admit, this time around I didn't do my normal routine of preordering it and getting to the store right at opening on release day. However, one reason I didn't do that and the main reason really, is that every single time that I've done that, there's an abundance of them, and most of the time so many that even months after (for some years after), there's still the steelbook exclusive sitting on the shelves.

\tSo, I did the what I shouldn't have, I assumed that Best Buy would have enough like they always did in the past, so instead of preordering and going at opening, I just went right after work and got to the store about 6:45pm. When I walked in the store I thought, yes this is going to be a great night cause I get to watch Rudolph when I get home, then the new Marvel's Agents of Shiled, and get the steelbook of Guardians to watch. It even looked like it was going to be good for me cause I see a stand for the movie right as I enter in the store. Now all I have to do is grab it, check out, and get out all in about a 2 minute time span.
\tNope. What a fool I was.

\tI searched that store going down every isle for the movies, the cd's, the stands at the ends and in the walkways, and I did it multiple times. I'm sure the cameras in the store was focused on me thinking I was up to something since I was walking slow and scanning all around me, but I was just looking for the steelbook that maybe if I was lucky might have been hidden behind another movie or something else. It wasn't and I wasn't.

Not only is this exclusive sold out online, but it's sold out in every store in my area. There is one store that has it, it's nearly a 2 hour drive away. Aside from feeling defeated in my search and settling for just the Blu Ray version, even if I wanted to get this steelbook, I probably still wouldn't get it. I can't go during the weekday cause I work until 6:30 and with a 2 hour drive, that puts me there at 8:30 and then another 2 hours drive back, now I'm home at 10:30. I can't watch it cause I have my reviews to do, so I just spent 4 hours driving, the gas money, having to now stay up longer than I want to work on a review because I spent 4 hours driving, I miss out on doing anything I want to in my free time like reading comics (and yes I love doing my reviews, it's right now one of my funniest jobs I got, but like all jobs, fun or not, it's still a job and when you have to spend a full work day at work to be in a car for 4 hours to get a movie you won't get to watch and to do more work, well I'm not wanting to do that). So, my only real choice is to wait until Saturday to do it when I would have the time to do so but considering how quickly these have sold out on release day, will there still be some left near the end of the week?

\tMy next choice is to look on ebay. Not going to happen. Not the looking, but the buying because even though I would like to have the steelbook, paying the prices people are wanting on ebay is way too much for this piece that, yes is very cool, it's not that wise a choice. I have already spent money on the regular version, I would have to not only spend double what the store price was but I would also be getting the 3D with it that's worthless to me since I can't even watch it on 3D.
\tNot ranting here, don't take it that way, I'm just explain in a very long way, if you are looking for this steelbook exclusive, you're unlikely in getting one.
\tWhich brings me to my next topic....
\t
COLLECTOR'S WORLD MADE POPULAR:
\tAre you a collector of comics, games, toys, or related items? Have you noticed a growing annoyance in the field? I'm talking about the collector items selling out and then being resold online for high to only if I was rich prices. There's always been that in the world of collecting, it's just part of the deal, but ever since the boom in popularity with the movies, games, and television shows, the collecting world has become harder.
\tBefore the world knew about it, the collector’s items were being bought by collectors and sold by them. Some items would be hard to find and prices would be high, but they were still done mainly by collectors. And yes there was some that was getting and selling them just for a profit, but it was still pretty much a close group of people.
\tTimes have changed ever since the movies and shows have shined a light on the collecting world. Before when comics and toys where just for kids and the general public that might have known that they could be worth money thought that the only ones worth money was the very old comics and toys. Now they know that a new comic, toy, or item that just came out today can turn into instant cash if you have the right one and because of that people who once overlooked it are now out there getting them. It's a business, I understand that, and I understand that need and want for more money in your own pocket, however what I don't like are the people that will go to a store, buy as many or buy out all of the item just to post online somewhere with a price that triples the original price or more, and say look at this rare item that can't be found in stores. Well, maybe if you wasn't such a jerk and bought 15 of them to sell online I would have had the chance to buy them in the store.

(Don't know whose collection this is but it's pretty awesome)
\tAnd yes I understand that some items are actually rare and only have a limited amount out there to start with but does that make it any better when someone buys more than one just so they can sell it to get money? For instance, if you know me you know I have a great liking for Harley Quinn and everything involving her. Well, her first appearance in the comics is a comic that is not a cheap comic to get. I want this comic, however, I don't want it for a profit, I'm not going to buy it to try to sale at a higher price, I want it to collect and put on my wall. This example is not as good but it gets my point across because that comic came out years ago and is one that is a bit hard to get. However, there are items that came out this week, like the steelbook Blu Ray of Guardians that was picked up by people wanting to get that extra buck off the collectors because they can't find them. All I'm saying is stop taking away from the people that just want to have it for their collection just so you can get a few extra dollars. If you want to do that, then buy only 1, get that, ONE, not multiple, 1, of the items and sell that one cause otherwise you're just being greedy and most likely you have caused someone not to get that item they want.
\t

Mon, 15 Dec 2014 02:00:02 +0000 Lee Roberts 59197 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/12/14/collecting-can-be-a-hardship-today#comments Christmas Gift Ideas for the Comic Fan http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/12/07/christmas-gift-ideas-for-the-comic-fan

TIS THE SEASON:
\tAlright, it's now officially December and that means gift giving time. For some people this holiday is tough to pick out the right gift for those ones that like comic books. It's also tough for us comic fans getting some of the gifts from those people because they either give us comics that we have no interest in or ones we already have. That's why I'm going to make this blog about helping those gift givers find and give some of the comic fans gifts that they will like or possibly not have but want.
\tWhat I will do is give you an item as well as ways to find out if these are the right ones for that comic fan loved one. Some of the ways will be easy to find out, some might require you to play 20 questions, and a few might be required for you to ask outright if they have or like them. But at least you will have an idea for those gifts that you didn't know.
\tBy the way, if you are reading this and you are the ones that like the comics and would be getting the gifts (which I'm going to assume that you are), then copy and paste this list, email it, send the link, do whatever you want to give it to those that would need this, and let them know that they can read it and get an idea. Or maybe pass it along to those that aren't in your family or gives you the gifts, but you know they do have someone and it would help, like that friend whose parent or loved one still buys the first comic that's seen on the stand and is nothing that will ever be read.
\tTHE LIST:
1) The Walking Dead
WHAT TO GET:
1) The Walking Dead Compendium One and/or Two. You can find these on amazon used starting around $25-$30 and new $35+, there are some on ebay as well that range in price. Both of these books are huge and wonderful.

2) Seasons 1-4. These are pretty easy to find and some of them are cheap. However there are some that will appease the fans that are ore than just the movies. The limited edition sets for seasons 3 and 4 that are a collection piece and the show. Unless you have money to spare, season two limited edition might be out of your means with it ranging in the high hundreds to near a grand for this piece. However season 3 and 4 you can find under $70.

3) Games. There's so many different games out there now that are Walking Dead related. You can get the video games of season 1 and 2, one that's a collector's edition, there's a Yahtzee game of it that has a zombie head as part of it, so this one is just find out what kind of game they like and get it to match.

4) Toys and Statues. There's a ton of these, if they do collect to the toys/statues, then just look around the room to find out which ones they have. If you have to and can, sneak a few pics of the ones around the room and then take those into the comic shop to show the workers, they will know which ones they are and from there they can find you the ones you would need. Now be warned though, if you are looking to get the toys/statues, some can be quite expensive.

HOW TO ASK: This one is fairly simple, the first way is to find out if the person watches the show. Just ask if they watch it. See the first step is easy to do. Once you have asked if they watch the show, ask if the show really is the same as the comic cause you heard it wasn't nothing like it. If they are a fan of the comic and read it, then they will have something to say about it, whether they read the comic or not they should at least say at one point that they do or don't read them. If they do read them then you will have to do a little more investigation.
\tIf they do read them then you can say that you heard those early issues are worth a lot of money (they are, issue #1 goes for over 1K), ask if they have any of them. If they say yes then you won't be getting them any of these comics but if they say no (and unless you have enough money to spare to spend a few thousand dollars on back issues) then you still probably won't get them the originals but you now know a little more to ask the follow up question. If they said yes to reading them but don't have those early issues, ask them how did they read them if they don't have those early issues. Once you find out, maybe they borrowed them, read them online, or they have the compendiums. If they tell you they are reading the current issues but don't have the early ones then you are good to get the trades. Go ahead and get the compendium for them, they will love it if they don't already have it. And even if they do have the original first prints of the early issues, you might want to get the compendiums just so they can have reference or want to re-read the back issues again but don't want to risk damaging the comics, this collected version is great for doing just that.

2) Spider-Man aka Peter Parker
What To Get: There's a bunch of items out there because this character has been around for many years. Picking something releated to this character is both easy because there is so much out there it's easy to find (maybe not cheap but easy), as well as being hard because you just might not know what one to get. But here's a few ideas.
1) Graphic Novels: Like I said there's a bunch of them out there so picking a graphic novel will depend on if you want to get first, middle, or current age stories. There is the Marvel Comics Essential graphic novels that have been collecting the Amazing, Spectacular, Web, and others of Spider-Man since issue #1. These can be found in comic shops for some of the early numbers, like book #1, or online on amazon but I say check with the comic shop first, help out local buisness first, amazon gets enough as is, but there is also major book shops with some as well.

2) Comics: For new readers right now is a great jumping on point for anyone wanting to read Spider-Man. Amazing Spider-Man is only on issue #10 and issues #1-10 can be found pretty easily at comic shops.

3) Toys: Toys are actually a little more tricky on picking because there are so many of them out there. Do you want something current, something that's more cartoon like, maybe one that's based off the movie, or just one that is a collectors piece, there's a lot of them. So where to get them? Depends, for those current, cartoon, or movie ones and a few collectors, try Toys R Us, Walmart, For some of the more hard to find pieces, try the comic shops, maybe even ebay if you feel lucky,

\t

3) Movies
\tWhat to get: Lots of movies to choose from but also lots of cool ones to choose from.
1) Guardians of the Galaxy: It comes out December 9, 2014 and will make a great gift

2) Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase One Collection Case: If you have someone that's just now getting into the movies, Marvel is on Phase Two so if you want to pick some movies for the movie and comic fan, the Phase One collection is the way to go. It's a case shaped like the one from the movie, includes 6 movies, lots of extras, fun files, and even a tesseract cube.

3) Batman Collection: The Christian Bale collection can be bought with all 3 movies on Blu Ray for about $50-$80

4) Heroes: This was a great show (yeah it had a few problems going towards the end but it's still a great show). Come on it came out today and it's awesome! Ok, so the speeder that resembles a chocolate ice cream bar and the soccer ball droid are chuckle worthy but otherwise the footage extremely cool. Seeing the Falcom in action again was my highlight of the trailer but the whole thing looks beautiful. Here are a few bits from the trailer.

\tLightsaber: sure it looks really cool and kind of like a sword with the handle guards but just what are those side beams for? Will they be used? Maybe during a duel where the two sabers are together the sides could extend to hit someone in the face or body? Then again maybe they are just for looks, like they are exhausts for the saber that almost looks like it's on fire. But seeing the red against the black of night and the white of the snow is nicely done. And who is this? I'm guessing with the red lightsaber that it is the Sith villain but does that mean it's not Luke? Maybe he has a little dark side in him in this film?

\t

\t

\t

\tNow for the Falcon scene where it swoops in, does a loop, and flys down close to the ground as two Tie Fighters come at it. This scene is the one that shows me that this film will have some very different and breath taking shots and how they are being used. And just look at how awesome the Falcon looks.

\t

\t

\t

\tThe chocolate ice cream bar speeder bike that has a woman on it that I don't know who it is. He's not a clone at least but he looks a little flustered. Not sure what has happened to him, maybe he's just hot from what looks like Tatooine cause I would think being in a Stormtrooper armor on Tatooine would be kind of hot. Is this scene after the one with all the Stormtroopers in what looks like a ship? I don't think so cause it looks like the door opens to someplace dark and not so full of sand. Still, a Stormtrooper with no helmet that's not a Clone Trooper, cool.

\t

\t

\t

\t

\tLIMITED REALLY MEANS VERY LIMITED DON'T EVEN WASTE TIME TRYING TO GET:

\tWhat I'm talking about here is the limited release of the Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack on cassette tape. In fact, even if you went to a record store that was selling it, went early, stood in line, you still probably didn't get it.

\t

\t

\t

\tOn Wednesday I called the three record stores that where listed as doing the release. With each I had three questions to ask.

\t

\t1) Are you going to have the Guardians of the Galaxy cassette tape on Friday?

\t2) What time do you open?

\t3) How much is it?

\tSo here are the answers that I got from the three stores.

\t

\tStore #1 Repo Record

\t1) Yes we will have them but only about 8 of them. I expect a line for them.

\t2) We open at 10am.

\t3) 8 bucks, they are $7.99.

\t

\tStore #2 Lunchbox Records

\t1) Yes we will.

\t2) We're opening at 9am Friday.

\t3) They're $7.99

\tAs a follow up question to them I asked how many they would have, his answer was, "I can't tell you."

\t

\tStore #3 The Wax Museum

\t1) This is a wax museum, we don't do any new releases of records.

\t

\tSo, those where my answers on Wednesday Nov 26, 2014 when I called. Today, Friday Nov 28, 2014 get up at 7am so I can go to Lunchbox Records. I choose this one first because I had to be at work at 10:30am so going to the one that opens at 10am was risky. I get to Lunchbox Records at 8am and there is a line already. I get in line, stand in the 40 degree cold weather with the wind blowing and in the shade, and there I stand for the next hour waiting for 9am to arrive so I can get inside to get my tape.

\t9AM arrives, they only let in a few people because the store is small. Ok, so now I'm still standing outside in the cold. Slowly, very, very slowly, the people start to come out one at a time. With each one person that leaves, one person is let inside.

\t9:51AM, I'm at the front door now. There is the man that lets people in and out standing at the door on the inside. He lets someone out and I finally get to go in and I rush to the back, find a worker, ask, where are the Guardians of the Galaxy tape? We're sold out of them.

\tWHAT?!

\tFirst, I understand the line waiting, I understand the fire code by not letting in too many people, what I don't understand is not informing the people that are standing in line outside in 40 degree weather for nearly 2 hours that they have sold out of the tape. How hard would it have been for the man at the door to come outside when they sold out of the tapes to say, excuse me, anyone that is looking for the Guaridans of the Galaxy cassette tape, we are sold out. I'm betting they sold out quickly which means I stood in line in the cold for no reason what so ever except for the workers at Lunchbox being too lazy or uncaring enough to inform their customers they where out. Though that won't be a problem for me any from this point on since I won't ever step foot in that buisness again.

\tNow, since that store was such a horrible experience and bust for me, I see the time.

\t9:56AM.

\tGreat, I'm only 6 minutes away from Repo Records, they open at 10AM, I might as well chance it now. I get in car, make it to the store at 10:01AM, and there's only 3 cars in the parking lot. Well, to say I was excited is putting it mildly. They've only been open for a minute and there's no cars in the lot, I'm sure to get a tape.

\tNOPE.

\tI go in, the guy at the checkout looks at me, asks can he help me. Yes you can, do you have the Guardians of the Galaxy cassette tape?

\tNo, we sold out of them.

\tWHAT?

\tHow did you sell out of them already, I ask, you just opened. No, we opened at 9AM.

\tWell, gee, glad I was told the wrong time of the opening on Wednesday. And now here I sit, no tape, not happy at all, and saw on ebay how much these tapes are going for is way more than I will ever spend on any cassette tape. Maybe if you live in a small town where there aren't many people going to look for a cassette tape of a soundtrack for a movie, then maybe you can get one. Me, I've called every record store that is within a 40 minute drive of where I live that was listed on the site of stores participating in the release and none of them have the tape. When Marvel said limited, they really did mean limited in this instance.

Tags:

Star Wars

Force Awakens

Records

Guardians of the Galaxy

Fri, 28 Nov 2014 19:48:11 +0000 Lee Roberts 59111 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/11/28/star-wars-force-awakens-unleashes-the-trailer-and-cassette-tape-is-sold#comments Whose Who List of 7 of the Upcoming 24 Comic Based Movies http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/11/23/whose-who-list-of-7-of-the-upcoming-24-comic-based-movies

NOW THAT'S A LOT OF MOVIES:
\tAt this point in time if you have a television set or a computer or just go out in public to talk to people, you know about comic book based movies. 15 years ago if I were to talk about the movie, “Generation X” that was done in 1996 or maybe the one with David Hasselholf that was done 2 years later in 1998 called, “Nick Fury: Agent of Shield”, would you know about it? I can speak from experience that the majority of people that I had talked to about those movies 15 years ago who wasn't already at the comic book shop had no clue about them and more than likely most people still don't know about them, they are horrible and was done for TV when things like that wasn't the in thing.
\tAll that has changed, dramatically, so much so that people that I would say would never, ever, ever, never, would know about comic characters or say that they like them, are saying exactly that. That's because of the movies and we all know that. I accept that, I like that in a way because that has spiked the urge for people to want comics which in turn helps keep them going which means I keep getting to read them. It also means I have to deal with higher prices and harder to find back issues that I might want because now all of a sudden people are selling them when they didn't before because of the upcoming movie so they sell them for higher prices.
\tAt any rate, that's not what this blog is about, it's about a whose who list of what you need to know about the upcoming 24 comic based movies that will be coming out between 2015-2019. That is a whole lot of comic movies with a whole lot of characters and these are only the big name popular movies that's been announced. I'm sure between now and the next 5 years there will be other lesser known about movies based off comics but since those are not the ones that's been announced and not the ones the general public know about, I will stick with these core 24.
\tHowever, I won't talk about all of them in detail because they might already be known, such as Captain America, Iron Man, Avengers, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and such are characters the general public knows about. But there are a few that might not be known about like Black Panther, Shazam, Inhumans, and Suicide Squad are just a few of the movies that just might not have a lot known about them and with that here is a little list of helpful tips on some of those lesser known of the movies.

By the way, this could be info that you might not know about the movie plots so you might want to be ready for SPOILERS.

1) Ant-Man: Not going to be Hank Pym but he will be in it only as an older man who is now the mentor to Scott Lang. Once a thief, possibly still is, Scott Lang is supposed to keep the Ant-Man tech safe but it's a movie so of course he won't and that will bring in the Yellowjacket. A villain will have tech that's stolen from the Ant-Man tech but better. In this movie there will also be Hank Pym's daughter, Hope Van Dyne played by Evangeline Lilly. She already has the haircut as Wasp so will she be the Wasp in the movie? Maybe, most likely I'm thinking since she is the daughter to Hank, she will be around Scott, they will hit it off, he becomes Ant-Man and she the Wasp, and together will have to fight Yellowjacket.

2) Black Panther: This is T'Challa the King of Wakanda and is one of the 8 smartest people on the planet. I won't go through all 8 but some others that are notable on the list are Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Bruce Banner, and Hank Pym, with the order of these being 1. Reed Richards, 2. Hank Pym, 3. Bruce Banner, 5. Tony Stark, and 6. T'Challa. Like with most comics, the order usually changes some as who is smarter than who depending on the writer. I've seen it said that T'Challa is way smarter than Tony Stark and on the levels of Reed Richards but the order don't matter much I just wanted to point out that T'Challa is extremely smart. One point to make with him is that his land has the only existence of vibranium (that metal that's used in Captain America's shield and later made into adamantium (vibranium not the shield)). T'Challa is not only super genius but he's also on the levels and possibly more skilled as Captain America. He has the super human stregnth levels and fighting skills along with his genius. The Black Panther is one of the more deadly humans that are on the planet that can fight on the field as well as with his mind, this movie should be good.
\t The character will be introduced in the third Captain America movie, Civil War and will be played by the actor Chadwick Boseman. I'm not sure what his role will be in the Captain America movie, more likely he will do what he did in the comic version where he tries to bring the two sides together as well as serving as a introduction to the movie fans so they know who he is when his movie comes out in 2017.
\t

3) Suicide Squad: This is a DC Comics team that I was surprised and yet happy to see getting made. Here's the reason why I was surprised, this team is not really a good team or are heroes. The Suicide Squad is composed of villains, that's right villains, people that have committed crimes and murder, on multiple occasions, and have no areas of gray when it comes to their villainous ways. They are brought together to go out on missions that heroes can't do, which usually means killing and more than likely will be a sucide mission for themselves, hence the name of the team being Suicide Squad. Now the reason why I'm happy to see this movie being made, Harley Quinn will be in it. If you know me or read my blogs you know how much I love this character so I can't wait to see her being performed in a live action movie. Here are the only characters to be listed for the movie so far, and these aren't set in stone, Harley Quinn, Deadshot, and Lex Luthor. For the actors playing them, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn and Jai Courtney as Deadshot. Will Smith and Jessie Eisenberg are rumored to be in this movie as well, Jessie as Lex Luthor and I'm thinking Will Smith will play Black Spider, aka Eric Needham, a ninja that was once a hero but did some unlawful things that landed him in Blackgate and then on the team.

\t

4) Doctor Strange: Stephen Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme in the Marvel Universe. He's the guy that if you want anything magical you go to him. Actually, he covers more than just magic, he does spiritual as well as magic, so the movie might have some religious themes in it. It's rumored that Benedict Cumberbatch will play Stephen Strange, for now it's just a rumor.

5) Inhumans: This is not just one person, as the plural part in the name indicates, they are many. Brief history, way back when the Earth was young and had primitive race of humans on it, there was a war going on in space. Earth sat in a key location for these fighting worlds, so one came to Earth to do experiments on the humans using a mutagenic Terrigen Mist that turned some of the humans into people with powers. Not quite mutants but also similar because the people already had to have the genes for the mist to activate. Over the many millions of years the Inhumans have been around and they are very powerful, the king of them, Black Bolt, has the power that when he speaks, even at a slight whisper, his voice will level cities. Right now the television show, Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., might be using the Inhumans as their theme of powered people, which would be genius cause they could have anyone they wanted have powers as well as being the lead in to the movie and that would mean more viewers. So watch.

6) Shazam: Alright, some of you might already know about this one, he's been around for a very long time, but he's just not as popular as he was back in the 50's. Shazam is a kid really, Billy Baston, who was granted magical powers by a wizard and when he says the word “Shazam” he becomes Shazam. He's actually one of the few people that can go toe to toe with Superman and win. Why? Because his power is magic based and that's a weakness for Superman.

7) Captain Marvel: This is one I'm looking forward to and I'd bet a lot of others as well because Mrs. Marvel aka Captain Marvel aka Carol Danvers, is a character that is highly liked. She has many powers, energy absorption and projection, super strength, and flight. Not only that but she is a military pilot, she's smart, and a good fighter that's been trained by the military so knows how to hold her own. This should be an exciting movie and I'm sure she will end up being a part of the second part of Avengers Infinity War movie and possibly gets some cameos in early movies leading up to her own.

\t
\tThere you go, a nice list of what you need to know for basic facts of the coming 24 movies.

Tags:

marvel

dc

comics

movies

Sun, 23 Nov 2014 20:50:14 +0000 Lee Roberts 59091 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/11/23/whose-who-list-of-7-of-the-upcoming-24-comic-based-movies#comments 2015 is Guardians Year and New Ninjas http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/11/16/2015-is-guardians-year-and-new-ninjas

MARVEL REALLY MEANS PLURAL FOR GUARDIANS OF GALAXY:
\tFirst let me say this, I love Guardians of the Galaxy, both comics and the movie, but it's because of James Gunn's movie that there are so many Guardians. Not as far as the characters go, I'm talking about how Marvel will have a total of 6 titles out that are Guardians of the Galaxy based. Right now there are 4, the core title Guardians of the Galaxy, the original team Guardians 3000, and then the two titles that focus on one main character with Rocket Raccoon and The Legendary Star-Lord. But coming out in 2015 there will be 2 more, Gamora and now Guardians Team-Up.

\tAs I sat here thinking what I would say about this news, do I like the idea of having more Guardians books, do I not like it, is it worth telling these stories, or which character deserves a title, I realized I did like the idea. Of course the core book is needed and one that I've always liked, which is why I also like Guardians 3000 because these characters where the first ones I was introduced to way back when that got me to like Guardians. These two are fine and work well being their own titles but what about the other 4?

\tRocket Raccoon, The Legendary Star-Lord, and Gamora are a good idea for the most part. I like the idea of getting new stories about Rocket and Gamora because these two characters have a lot of history that we don't know about. There are so many stories that can be told about who they were before joining the Guardians as well as what they do when they are not together fighting. However, Star-Lord, yeah he's cool, he also has a lot of stories, but he's like the quarter back of a football team. He's the one that's always talked about while the kicker only gets talked about when he does something wrong or makes that long kick, as for his normal kicks are just like enh ok. Well, that's Star-Lord, the QB that is not the kicker, he's getting a lot of stories and adventures anyways because of being the leader of the team. Let's get someone different, like Gamora, Groot even, or one on Drax.

\tNow getting a team-up title, that can be very interesting, to me at least it can be. One thing that I always liked was when the Guardians met up with some of the regular Marvel U characters. Sure most of the Avengers know about them and Spidey does, but Spidey don't get to go out on battles with the hardly at all. What about Daredevil, Punisher, or even some cosmic people like Silver Surfer and Nova? Ok those last two have had team8-ups but it's always cool to see another one. I would like to see more with Thor, which now will be actually new and a first time team-up (maybe depends on who she is) with the new lady Thor. So Guardians Team-Up has a thumbs up from me so far. And just look at this promo art, so cool, especially Gamora with the swords.

\tWHAT'S OLD IS NEW AND WHAT'S MUTANT IS NINJA:
\tYou know of those 4 brothers that are ninjas, teenagers, and are mutants. Well, guess what? They're not the only mutant animal team out there for IDW Publishing. There's also Pigeon Pete, Slash, Herman the Hermit Crab, Mondo Gecko, and Old Hob and now they will be getting a 4 part mini-series that will be release February 2015. These are other mutant animals, or also known as, "Mutanimals", that had a series in the 90's and now after many years they get another go. Should they? Maybe, I'm sure they have a following, after-all, when it comes to a Ninja Turtles character, they become cult favorites.

\t

Sun, 16 Nov 2014 19:23:59 +0000 Lee Roberts 59062 at http://www.shakefire.com http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/lee-roberts/2014/11/16/2015-is-guardians-year-and-new-ninjas#comments DragonCon 2014 Geek Christmasween http://www.shakefire.com/blogs/maria-jackson/2014/11/14/dragoncon-2014-geek-christmasween

You want to know what to get your fellow nerd for Christmas? The Walking Dead Comic Book Series vs The Walking Dead Television Show

So I’ve been reading the Walking Dead comic, made it up to issue 8 right now. I figured with the re-airing of the show that AMC did this week I would talk about the comic versus the show.

With all the movies and shows that have been made based off a comic, it’s a short list for the ones that stay true to the comic. It’s gotten a lot better in the recent years, which makes fanboys like myself happy. So it’s been with a great pleasure that as I read the comic series of The Walking Dead I’m seeing that the show has kept true to the comic.
Though there is still some parts that the show has changed from the comic. To be expected though, and that’s why I’m writing this blog.
Oh, before I go on…

WARNING SPOILERS FOLLOW
DANGER!DANGER! IF YOU HAVE NOT SEEN THE SHOW OR READ THE COMIC SKIP THIS CAUSE I WILL GIVE OUT SPOILERS!!! THOUGH I SUPPOSE IF YOU HAVE SEEN THE SHOW AND/OR READ THE COMIC THEN WHAT I TALK ABOUT HERE WON'T BE ANYTHING NEW TO YOU OTHER THEN ME SAYING I LIKE THE COMIC MORE, SO IN FACT IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE SHOW OR READ THE COMIC OR HAVE DID ONE OF THE TWO BUT NOT BOTH AND YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE THAN GO AHEAD AND READ ON IT MIGHT BE INFORMATIVE.

You have been warned so don’t say I didn’t tell you so!
So the comic vs. the show, what is different and which is better?
Hmm, that latter question is actually tough to answer. I love zombie flicks and this show, though at times is a little slow, overall it’s made on the level of some zombie movies. Hell, it’s actually got a lot of them beat in the way the zombies look and the effects they have on the show. And because I love comics as much as I do zombie movies having one that’s been this good on tv as well as a comic being good, it’s tough to decide which one is better.

With some thought though I would have to side with the comic. Sure the show is awesome, the effects are just as great, and they have some decent actors on it. The comic book though has all that but on printed form and the story has a quicker pace to it than the show.
So far in the 7 issues that I’ve read the story is that Rick Grimes has woke up after being in a coma from being shot. On the show it’s the same though it had Rick being shot by guys that where being chased by the cops. In the comic Rick and his partner Shane were in a shoot out with a guy in a truck that was stopped in the middle of the road. Where on the show Rick didn’t see the last guy crawling out of the over turned car to shoot him, the comic has Rick trying to draw fire away from Shane so Shane can shoot the bad guy. Instead Rick gets shot, in both show and comic, ends up in a coma, then later wakes up to find zombies.

So far both have been the same. But the comic is better cause it moves along quick from seeing the shooting to all of a sudden zombies and then boom Rick is meeting Glen in Atlanta. Actually everything has been the same that I can see except for 2 main things.
The first being is Merle Dixon on the show, he’s not in the comic so far. Now I can’t say for sure that he won’t appear, for all I know he might come into the comic in issue 8 but since I haven’t read it yet I wouldn’t know. However, I do know he’s not in issues 1-7 but he was on the show pretty quickly. Still, there’s a lot of comics I have left to read, 71 in fact, and that leaves a lot of room for his character to appear.

Second thing that’s different from the comic and the show is Shane. Not in the way he acts or how he wants Ricks wife Lori and how those two had a little fling while Rick was in a coma and zombies were overtaking the world. All that’s been seen in the show with Shane is the same as in the comic, aside from the comic moving at a quicker pace. Difference between the two is that by the end of issue 6 Shane was dead. He didn’t die in a nice way, though he wasn’t ate by a zombie so he didn’t die horrible either. Still, in the comic, he’s dead. Though I’m thinking that with it being a comic on zombies and they buried him after being shot in the throat, that Shane will be coming back again in zombie form. On the show however, Shane is still alive and kicking and still looking at Rick with hate and with lust for Lori.

Still, the comic so far has been much better. They are fun to read, have some great artwork that can tell the story with just looking at the expressions on the faces of the characters (which when doing it with drawings is something amazing when done correctly), and has a great flow to the story. One of the aspects that makes the comic have a good impact is that it’s done in black and white. No color in this comic. I think if it had been in color it wouldn’t be as good as it is. Something about the black and white pages that make the story and the artwork stand out more than color would.

Anyways, that’s that difference between the comic version and the televised version of The Walking Dead. I can’t wait to read more on the comic and see season 2 of the show and hopefully by the time season 2 starts I will have read all of the comics so I will know even more. Till next time, braaaainnnssss!

The Walking Dead

I’m hooked on both the comics and the TV series. I just finished watching the Blu-ray yesterday and I can’t wait for the next season of the Walking Dead. But just a heads up if you have DirecTV, you can’t watch your zombies on AMC in HD because they don’t carry AMC in HD. What!? No zombies in HD next season? Good news though, with DISH Network you get your zombies on AMC in HD! As a customer/employee of DISH I can’t say how happy I’ve been since I made the switch. Don’t you want to see your zombies in HD?

The difference

You should keep updates on this. It's nice to hear someone elses perspective. There is quite a few differences in this new season. like with otis's death.
